COLIC IN BABIES:

Colic in infants and children. Baby colic is one of the most common ailments in infants. According to various authors, the frequency of occurrence was estimated on the basis of prospective studies for 3 to 28% and retrospective studies, 8 to 40 % of the population of infants. Colic symptoms occur most often between 2 and 16 weeks of age (three-month colic, commonly called the "100 days of weeping"), the summit is reached at approximately 6 weeks. A typical attack of colic runs from curling legs, abdomen spasms and tensioning of the body. Colic occurs often with enlargement of abdominal circumference.Children's and babies colic is caused by forming of the bubbles of air in the child’s stomach. The air enters the stomach with the food. When the stomach is filled with air bubbles his muscles cannot relax causing cramps and pain. Moreover, stomach acknowledges that it is full of food. This results in unnecessary production of acid responsible for the digestion of food, which will further cause gastric irritation and intensify the pain. Colic disappears automatically when the baby reaches about 4 months of age.
